When you have a baby, it may be difficult to socialize with your friends and family like you used to. With COVID-19 and physical distancing, it can be even harder. Yet, research has shown that when new parents spend time with friends or family, this socialization can have a positive impact not only on the parent’s health, but also on the baby’s health and cognitive development.
Simple Ideas for Connecting with Others
Even though caring for a new baby is time consuming, try your best to connect with others (we know it can be really challenging!):
have a quick, five-minute FaceTime or phone call with a friend while your baby is taking a nap
go for a walk with your baby and a friend or family member who lives close to you
have an “adults-only” dinner with your partner once you’ve put your baby down for the night
watch a movie or show (even just part of one) with someone at home or use Zoom to share your computer screen with a friend and watch together
Even though it may take a lot of effort, spending time with a friend or family member (either in person or virtually) can have a positive effect on your mental health and the health of your baby.
